Day 56: Green Street

As I looked back over the past eight (!) weeks of this blog so far, I found it shocking that I had not once mentioned Green Street, one of my favorite bars (for the sake of being a bar, and nothing else) near Central. A bit removed from Central Square (well, by about two streets!), it sits just down the road from a salsa club I've never been to but have heard is fantastic. The best thing about Green St. is their cocktails. The food's great, though pricey, but their cocktails are exceedingly reasonably priced [to the extent that something can be exceedingly reasonable]. They have a short list they pass out, and then a much more extensive list -- plus a private list that is word-of-mouth (you gotta love when bars somehow manage to maintain a bit of the prohibitionist secretive vibe in this era, eh?).

Perhaps my favorite Green St. cocktail is the Bohemian -- simple, just gin, St. Germain, and grapefruit juice.  According to them, it's their own creation. While I'm sure they are not the first to have thought of it, I got a kick when I was once out at a much fancier drink-slinging venue in Boston which likes to create drinks on-the-fly based on patrons' ingredient choices, and a friend asked for something with St. Germain.  They suggested a Bohemian, and she said "Oh, I've had that before."  They were clearly surprised. (Apparently they must assume their clientele wouldn't "catch them in the act" of stealing a drink recipe all the way from Cambridge! -- or something.)  However their response was to bring the same drink, subbing tequila (hated by said friend) for the gin.  All this goes to say -- go to Green Sreet, and they will treat you right.

Anyhow, it was a Bohemian in which I indulged this evening, and in which I am sure I will indulge before I leave Cambridge for good. (Though I must say, the closely related Lady G does hold a soft spot in my heart, now.)
