Day 55: Georgetown Theater Workshop
Taking a bit of "poetic license" (er, prosaic license) yet again is necessary for this post. The Georgetown Theater Workshop is not in Cambridge. It is, in fact, in Georgetown, MA [see brief glimpse of stage from their last show above, complete with our will-hopefully-be director, S.]. Georgetown is about a 45 minute drive north of Boston, and it's where B., one of my good friends grew up. Throughout her youth and adolescence, her whole family was involved in theater -- and her mother still is. Last fall, I ventured out with B. and a motley crew to see one of the plays, and was really in awe of the fact that community theater still exists.
Well, this summer, we are going to try to keep it alive and bring it to Cambridge. B.'s mother has agreed to direct a show (if we can actually get organized enough to pick one and figure out a decent cast), so the other day we started brainstorming plays. I hopped on over to one of the public libraries nearby (in Medford) and snagged a bunch of tomes containing several options each. On the boiler plate: something by Kurt Vonnegut (who knew he was also a playwright?), some Neil Simon, the classic Arsenic and Old Lace, some Inge, a bunch of stuff by Joyce Carol Oates (you know that it's gonna be pretty screwed up), and just for fun, and something called Love Letters (which also has two other plays in the volume).
The other bit that is TBD is whether we will actually practice and perform in Cambridge, or whether we'll all trek out to Georgetown to use the space, which is amusingly located above a pre-school. Well at least we have options, right?
Apart from play-reading, today was spent acquiring a new phone (always a joy), working a bit, and watching the latest episode of Mad Men. Now there is a show with some people who can seriously act.
